There are many excellent breeders out there, just as there are horrid puppy mills. I've only seen one puppy mill, but that was enough to last me a lifetime. And that was the day I went into debt and came home with 21 Scotties, because I simply could not leave them in those devastating conditions. It took me months to get their beauty, health and confidence back, and even longer to find loving and patient homes for them.
I have been raising puppies for over 40 years. Our adult dogs are outside dogs, in dog runs. We do not have a puppy mill. Our babies are born, raised and socialized indoors.
Twenty years ago, I didn't think anything at all about inviting people to my home to see my puppies and birds. Unfortunately times have changed and this world is a different place than it used to be. I have had 3 occasions where I have invited people to my home to pick up their baby and their interest was NOT on the puppy or bird, but rather what was inside my home and whether I was alone or not. I felt very, very uncomfortable. I've had people ask me to email them pictures of where my adult dogs, birds and puppies are kept, and of the parents. This is totally understandable and I will gladly do that. But I won't email pictures of the rest of my house. I assure you that my dusting, sweeping and mopping chores sometimes get neglected with everything I have to keep up with. But we do not live in a home situation that we should be ashamed of. I've had people come to see my puppies and baby birds, ask to use my bathroom and spend too much time in there. After they left, I could tell that they had rummaged through my medicine cabinet in my bathroom. It doesn't need to be public knowledge as to what kind of stereo we have, how many computers we have, the size of our TV, what medications are available or how many people live in our home.
For these reasons, I insist on meeting people in a public place rather than inviting them to my home. I am inspected by AKC and am licensed by the City of Shawnee, who also does random inspections. I live in town and have neighbors on all sides of me. If I ran a puppy mill, I would be shut down in one day. So please understand, in this case, why I don't want people coming to my home. I have nothing to hide, but I have alot to lose, including possibly in today's world, my life.
